Fly Tying

Most fly fisherman tie their own flies. With the internet now days there are tutorials everywhere online. Tying flies is so relaxing, and while getting materials can be expensive up front, in the long run its definitely the cheapest way to get flies. Now I just started tying this year, so I am not claiming to be good at all.
Last week I caught my first trout on a fly I tied myself, an olive bead head nymph, super simple fly. 14 nymph hook, copper wire, olive thread and a silver bead. It was an awesome feeling catching a fish on a fly I tied. Don't be afraid if it doesn't look perfect, just dissect the fly you tied and try again, I have learned going slower is the key. It may take me a couple hours to tie a more complicated fly. Enjoy the time you sit at the vise, the more you do it the better you will become.

William Joseph Fly Pack Review

In August I bought a William Joseph fly chest pack from Cabela's. One of the best fly fishing investments ever. So handy to have everything I need right there, forceps, flies, fly boxes, and floatant. I recommend this to any fly fisher. 5 out of 5 stars.  To order the fly pack I have and check out other awesome William Joseph packs Click here

Guided Trip

Last Monday I was able to go on a guided fly fishing trip for my birthday. It was so awesome, and I learned so much. If anyone from Utah wants to go on a guided trip check out  Cranefly Fishing Company Danny Josephson was an awesome guide, we went to the Provo River. I caught about 13 fish using the nymphing technique, which was new for me, I had always thrown all patterns as a dry fly cast. I learned so much, it was an amazing experience, awesome one on one lesson. He taught me about tying flies, a little about entomology like how to determine what flies to use, and showed me a lot of places on the drive to the Provo River of other places for fishing. Cant wait to get out and explore some other places.

Beginner Fly Rod

When I wanted to start fly fishing, I had no idea where to start. I went into Bass Pro, and headed to the fly shop, and talked to a guy who helped me, anyone at your local sportsmans store, or local fly shop can help you. I have a 5 weight 8.5 foot fly rod, it came with the fly line already attached to the reel. As you get into fly fishing you can get into fancier rods and reels, and different weights depending on the type of fish species you are after, for most stream trout a 4 or 5 weight works perfect.
Dont be afraid to ask questions, Im going on a guided fly fishing trip on Monday for the day, and I cant wait to learn more, I know there is so much to learn, and it changes with the season, weather, and what fish you are targeting. So get out there and catch some fish!
